A Comment On Comments


We are currently using Disqus to provide comments on our site. In the spirit of openness, here’s what Disqus has to say about the comment systems data collection systems:

For logged-in users, when you opt out, we will remember your preference across all sites using Disqus. As long as you are logged in, you will not have to opt out again.

For logged-out users, when you opt out, we will place an opt-out cookie on your computer. The opt-out cookie tells us not to use your information for targeting. Note that if you delete, block, or otherwise restrict cookies, or if you use a different computer or browser, you will need to renew your opt-out choice.

Data Recipients

We share referring URLs with Captify to help them understand your interests. Here are links to their privacy policy and to opt-out of personalized marketing through Captify.

In addition to our API and web products, we share publicly-available comments and votes with DataSift and Socialgist to help companies more efficiently identify trends and public opinions. We also let them know when you update or delete a comment or vote. DataSift has published their take on privacy here.

We share your web browsing activity with Viglink to allow advertisers to personalize ads based on the types of products and services in which you seem to be interested. You may read Viglink’s privacy policy and opt-out.

Disqus uses “authentication” cookies, e.g., `sessionid`, `disqusauth`, and `disqusauths`, to keep you logged in from your web browser and personalize your Disqus experience.

When Disqus loads ads, we use ad serving technologies from GooglePolymorph, and ServerBid that may set cookies for the purposes of personalized marketing, associating ads with later activities, and limiting how often you are shown specific ads.”
